PRP Treatments Q&A

What is PRP treatment?

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is a healing substance that comes from your blood. Your blood contains red and white blood cells, platelets, and liquid (plasma). Platelets clot your blood to help you stop bleeding when injured, but they also contain growth factors, proteins that play a vital role in healing.

Growth factors help your body to repair itself quickly. But, your blood contains only a tiny amount of platelets overall.

PRP treatment places up to 10 times the normal amount of platelets in an area of injury, thereby speeding up the healing process.

When might I need PRP treatments?

You might need PRP treatments if you have an acute or chronic injury or condition that doesn’t improve with conservative treatments. Total Spine institute may suggest PRP treatments to address spine problems such as:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sacroiliac joint pain
  • Facet joint pain
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal arthritis

PRP can be an effective way to prompt your body to heal in many different situations, which in turn relieves your chronic spine pain.

How do PRP treatments work?

PRP treatments at Total Spine Institute start with blood collection, which is the same process as a blood draw for testing purposes. Then, the Total Spine Institute team performs centrifugation — a mechanical process that spins the blood at high speeds — on your tube of blood to separate it into layers.

After centrifugation, the platelets, plasma, and white blood cells rise to the top and the heavier red blood cells sink to the bottom of the tube. The team extracts only the platelets, white blood cells, and plasma and discards the remaining red blood cells.

Treatment involves injection into the specific area you need the PRP. The Total Spine Institute team uses ultrasound imaging to visualize the injection area and inject the PRP with perfect precision.

How many PRP injections do I need?

Most people need a series of PRP injections. Total Spine Institute assesses your condition and recommends a PRP injection plan based upon your needs and your response to the initial treatment.

After completing treatment, you can experience long-lasting results.
